How durable are Natural Jade Background Walls against impacts, scratches, and other forms of damage that may occur in high-traffic spaces?

Update:19 May 2025

Natural jade, particularly the higher-quality varieties like jadeite, is renowned for its toughness and density. However, as a natural stone, it is still vulnerable to certain levels of impact. When considering its impact resistance in high-traffic spaces, jade’s durability can generally withstand light to moderate impacts without significant damage. Everyday activities, such as incidental bumps or knocks, will typically not compromise the material. However, in spaces where high-impact activities are frequent (e.g., areas where furniture is frequently moved, or children or pets might play), a heavy blow or sharp force could cause cracks, chips, or fractures in the surface. To mitigate such risks, using thicker jade panels can be beneficial, as thicker stones offer more resilience to both impacts and stress. Ensuring that the walls are installed properly with adequate support behind them can further reduce the likelihood of structural damage.

Jade is considered relatively scratch-resistant compared to many other stones commonly used for wall cladding. Its hardness, ranging between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale, allows it to withstand most minor abrasions caused by daily use. The surface can endure typical wear and tear, such as accidental brushes from clothing or objects, without showing significant scratches. However, the material is still susceptible to scratches from harder materials, including metal tools, rough cleaning equipment, or abrasives. In high-traffic spaces, where accidental contact with hard objects may be more frequent, choosing jade with a polished finish can offer superior protection. Polished surfaces are smoother and less likely to accumulate visible scratches compared to matte or honed finishes. That said, polished jade may show surface scratches or smudges more easily, so regular cleaning and protective care are recommended to maintain its pristine appearance.

The finish applied to the jade surface plays a pivotal role in both its aesthetic appeal and its resistance to scratches and wear. A polished finish gives the stone a high-gloss, reflective surface that not only highlights the natural beauty of the jade but also makes it more resistant to surface-level abrasions. However, this finish can also reveal imperfections such as light scratches or fingerprints, particularly in high-touch areas of the space. In contrast, honed or matte finishes, while offering a more subdued aesthetic, are less prone to showing small scratches, fingerprints, or scuffs over time. These finishes are ideal for spaces that experience higher levels of activity, as they can better conceal minor surface imperfections. However, matte and honed finishes may be more susceptible to slight wear and tear over the long term, especially in areas that see constant friction, such as near doors, furniture, or high-traffic pedestrian paths.

Proper maintenance and care are key factors in prolonging the durability of Natural Jade Background Walls, particularly in high-traffic environments. While jade is inherently resistant to many forms of damage, the longevity of its appearance will depend on how it is cleaned and maintained. For regular upkeep, it’s essential to avoid abrasive cleaning agents or harsh chemicals that could wear down the surface or cause micro-scratches over time. Soft, non-abrasive cloths and mild stone cleaners are typically sufficient to maintain the wall’s surface. Using a stone sealant, if recommended by the manufacturer, can help provide an additional layer of protection against stains, dirt, and scratches. In high-traffic areas, where the risk of dirt accumulation and surface damage is higher, periodic re-sealing might be necessary to maintain the jade's smooth finish and enhance its resistance to abrasions. Users should avoid dragging heavy objects or using rough materials in direct contact with the jade, as this can result in scratches and damage.
